KON: Tomorrow’s Nostalgia
Posted on October 31, 2011 by Bambi
Last week, Sydney was officially welcomed into Summer’s Kingdom of Nothing.
Thursday night marked the official launch of the summer collection of burgeoning collective, King of Nothing. Representing the blend of skate, surf and street culture that defines young Australia, KON promises to bring its audiences collections of fresh wears, an artistic perspective so tight it’s mesmerising, and – if Thursday night is anything to go by – plastic cup after plastic cup of free Margarita slushies.
KON is a member of the PRIMO! extended family, and so we carpooled, bicycled and cabbed our ways over to aMBUSH Gallery, Waterloo to show our support. We had no particular expectations of the event – we just wanted to show that the love KON has shown for PRIMO! in the past is entirely requited. I can honestly say, however, that even if we had been a little bumbling group of totally uninformed strangers who stumbled upon aMBUSH Gallery that night by accident, our minds would have been completely and utterly blown. Besides the fact that we were groomed into affectionate submission by an open bar that continued to flow all night and box after box of individually wrapped snacks courtesy of the Beach Burrito Company, this show surpassed all expectations of an emergent label’s launch.
Illustrations, paintings, photographs and repurposed skate decks adorned the walls of a space converted to remind you of your teenage bedroom. Samples from the new collection filled old wardrobes, Ironlak cans by the row stocked the refrigerator, and the DJs blasted the dulcet tones of old school hip hop throughout the night. As the evening wore on, the event transformed into a gathering of like-minded people reminiscent of a high-school house party. We lounged on the grass outside, conferring about art, music and which of the beautiful people in attendance was most beautiful. In the converted garage next door to the gallery was a skate demonstration by KON and Westsyde Connection which served to further illustrate how deeply ingrained the label is with the lifestyle of their people.
All in all, this was an amazing night, and on behalf of the PRIMO! fam I would like to congratulate the KON crew on the successful introduction of their summer collection. We can’t wait to see what’s next for the collective.
