Interview: 14 Quick Questions with Sures
Posted on February 1, 2012 by L&G
Winners of the Laneway Festival unearthed, Sydney group the Sures have most definitely arrived. I got a chance to ask them some quick questions about their music, life, and what it means to them to be on the Laneway Festival gig.
L&G: Guys! Thanks for taking the time out to do a super quick interview with PRIMO! Magazine. First up; How did you guys meet to form the Sures?
Sures: Hi! We’ve been friends since we were 13, playing music under various monikers. This is our current one.
Where about’s are you guys from?
We’re from the slums of the Western Suburbs.
How did you guys get your start in music?
Well Jonas initially learnt the drums and i initially learnt the guitar, individually we’ve been through stages. I was keen on hardcore music, dabbled in folk and Jonas briefly had a stint writing electro-house music.
How would you describe your music to someone who hasn’t heard you before?
Electro-grind, power ballads, that will put them off.
Who are your inspirations musically?
Musically we draw on all sorts of artists, Elton John, Jeff Magnum, Tears for Fears. Anyone who understands melody really.
So, being the Laneway Festival unearthed winner? How does that feel?
Its pretty cool, we actually had just cancelled a trip to Thailand that would have coincided a few days before we found out which was super lucky.
Winning Laneway Festival unearthed has obviously helped to put you on the bill to play at Laneway. You have got to be pumped, right?
Well yeah! We were that close to buying tickets.
What are your thoughts on the Sydney music scene? Do you think it is at the forefront of Australian music, or lacking?
I think Sydney is doing pretty well for itself, there are obviously going to be good and bad bands in every scene. We’ve had music come out of here that has been way ahead of the rest though, kyu remains to be incomparable to anything else out there and Fishing has a pretty unique vibe about them too. It was pretty great how Seekae single-handedly created a genre with their first release and went on to put all the copycats to shame with their second.
It must have been a big year for you in 2011. What do you guys have install for fans in 2012?
Well we’re playing a whole bunch of shows, including some of our first interstate. Also at some point we’re hoping to put out some kind of release within a few months.
Speaking of 2011. What was your favourite track of the year, and by who?
Ffunny Ffriends – Unknown Mortal Orchestra, is perpetually stuck in my head.
If you guys weren’t musician, what would be your creative outlet outside of music?
Drinking coffee over a laptop at cafes, not correcting those that mistake me for a writer.
Have you ever had a moment where it made you think: “By God, I love this…”?
Do you have any gigs coming up in the Sydney area that people can go catch you at?
Yeah! We’re playing at the FBi social on the 17th with Claire and a few others, apart from that we’re supporting San Cisco and the Jungle Giants which should be fun.
Final question; What do you prefer burgers or burritos?
You’re lucky. Been getting too many burger responses lately, and was about to kill the next person that didn’t say burritos.
