David Banner – Sex, Drugs & Video Games (Mixtape)
Posted on May 24, 2012 by BeEasy
David Banner’s heavily promoted mixtape is finally officially unveiled to the internet world.
After being initially delayed, as well as a number of singles being leaked, Sex, Drugs & Video Games dropped this week to the delight of many hip hop fiends.
As was promised by Mr Banner, the mixtape/free album comes full of collabos with other prominent artists within the game, including Chris Breezy Brown, 2 Chainz, Snoop Dogg, Game, A$AP Rocky, Big K.R.I.T., Nipsey Hussle, Bun B and last but not least, Lil Wayne aka Tunechi.
Not only is the album full of big name features, the production line is certainly impressive, with Swiff D, THX, The Hypnotics and Banner himself all lending their talents to Sex, Drugs & Video Games.
Straight away I had high expectations of the mixtape, and although I have heard better joints in the past, it’s definitely not a stretch to say that this free album is sure to appeal to a wide audience, simply because it is so feature heavy. I’m not 100% sure Banner could pull this off on his lonesome.
Both the original version (ft 2 Chainz and Lil Wayne) and remixed (ft Chris Brown and A$AP Rocky) tracks of Yao Ming are standouts, as all dudes spit crazy flow in what is sure to be a club banger. I’ll try not to sound like I have a man crush on Breezy, but damnnnnnn this cat goes HARD when he’s on his rap game. I’m always so impressed with how much he has evolved as an artist in the past two years…let’s just try and not mention the Rhi Rhi incident shall we.
Californication is a nice track where Game and Snoop show why they’re OG veterans, while Swag Remix will have your head bobbing up and down without you even realising. Banner kills this track, and is definitely one of my favourites, even though I hate the word swag.
Overall, I was pretty impressed with Sex, Drugs & Video Games, and will no doubt be bumping this for the next month until the next big release drops. I’m still convinced that Meek Mill’s Dreamchasers 2 will be mixtape of the year, but we’ve still got a whole six months left. I’m excited to see who’s gonna try and take the title.
I give Mr Banner and friends a 7/10 for their efforts.
